Ingredients

For the Glaze
  • 1 pound Pearl Onions Fresh ones for best flavor
  • 2 tablespoons Cider Vinegar Can substitute with apple cider
  • 4 tablespoons Butter (cubed) Use margarine for dairy-free
  • 1/4 cup Whiskey or Apple Cider Adjust based on preference
  • 2 tablespoons Maple Syrup Honey works as an alternative
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Thyme Fresh thyme can be used
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt Sea salt can be used
  • 1/4 teaspoon Pepper Use red pepper flakes for extra kick
  • 1/2 cup Water Adjust for desired glaze consistency

Equipment

  • large nonstick skillet

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. In a large nonstick skillet, combine all the ingredients: pearl onions, cider vinegar, cubed butter, whiskey (or apple cider), maple syrup, dried thyme, kosher salt, pepper, and water. Stir everything together until the onions are evenly coated.
  2. Set your skillet over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, which typically takes about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the skillet. Allow the onions to simmer for 6-8 minutes until they become fork-tender.
  4. Uncover the skillet and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook for an additional 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid reduces into a glossy glaze.
  5. Once the liquid is almost evaporated, remove the skillet from heat and let the onions cool briefly before serving warm.

Notes

Fresh pearl onions yield the best result. Adjust maple syrup and monitor heat to avoid burning the glaze. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice before serving brightens the flavor.
