Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and prepare a baking dish by greasing it generously with butter.
  2. Cut your stale French bread or baguette into one-inch cubes and place them evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth and well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the cubed bread, using a spatula to ensure every piece is well-soaked. Let sit for about 10 minutes.
  5. If using raisins, sprinkle them over the top of the bread mixture now.
  6. Dot the top of the soaked bread pudding with small pieces of butter.
  7. Place the baking dish in your preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown on top.
  8. While your bread pudding is baking, prepare the rum sauce by melting butter, sugar, and rum in a saucepan until sugar dissolves.
  9. Allow the bread pudding to cool for a few minutes before serving, drizzled with the rum sauce.
