Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil and cook the dry macaroni pasta until almost al dente, about 5-6 minutes.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat and whisk in equal parts all-purpose flour until it forms a smooth roux.
  4. Gradually pour in 2 cups of whole milk and 1 cup of half-and-half while whisking until the sauce thickens.
  5. Stir in black pepper, nutmeg, garlic powder, and dried mustard, then gradually mix in cheeses until melted.
  6. Add the cooked macaroni to your cheese sauce, stirring to coat each piece.
  7. Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish and top with panko breadcrumbs.
  8. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  9. For extra crispiness, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  10. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
